Jams

Jams are a local speciality and are made from wild, orchard and garden fruits. Typically they are high in fruit, low in sugar, full of flavour and contain no other additives. Wild or forest fruits include strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, rose-hips and cornelian cherries. Orchard fruits include apples, pears and plums.

Saxon Village Preserves

Saxon Village Preserves is a project created in 2006 and supported by Slow Food. The Slow Food Presidium, Saxon Village Preserves was created in the Tarnava Mare area of Transylvania in 2006 to capture the ancient tradition of producing different kinds of homemade gem (jams and compotes) and dulceata (whole fruits in syrup similar to Bosnian slatko) using the fruit that grows in the courtyard or orchard or that is picked in the uncontaminated meadows and woods of this area.

The preserves are made by various small producers who come together at the Saschiz Food Barn. You can buy a wide range of jams and other preserves directly from Saschiz Tourist Information Centre or through various other outlets.

Saxon Village Preserves represents a new and interesting source of revenue for people who are reliant on agriculture and often whose only other source of income is selling milk at very low prices.

Producers participated in the international food festivals organised in Turin by Slow Food. In 2006 they were overwhelmed by the positive reaction to their jams and honey and returned to Romania enthusiastic and motivated. The Presidium members have gained not only income but pride and confidence, and social benefits from meeting like minded people from neighbouring villages when recipes are exchanged and prices compared.
